Ive been coming to Extra Care Auto Repair for almost a year now for mostly oil changes and a minor electrical issue with my door handle and appreciate their professional service. I always let them know in advance that Im coming as they are usually busy, but its never been an issue. Theyre officially open at 10 am on weekdays.

I was well overdue for my 60k mileage checkup and was also having issues with my battery. So after some researching, I ended up bringing my car in to Extra Care Auto Repair. Mike was upfront and told me about the things that didnt need to be checked for the maintenance and looked into what was going on with my battery. When I got my car back everything seemed to be fine and Mike told me that he charged my battery and couldnt find anything wrong with it. Unfortunately, that night my battery ended up dying and I ended up having to replace the battery, and when I did, a bunch of problems started happening (Yes, I installed the battery correctly). So I brought my car in and Mike ended up taking a look at it and kept it over the weekend. When I went back in to pick up the car, he was honest and told me that he didnt know what was going on, but the problem just randomly stopped happening. I guess my car just wanted to go home. Anyway, tl;dr, Mike is an open, honest mechanic who will tell you like it is.

Mike and his team went above and beyond to make my trip to San Francisco as convenient as possible. Brought my rental in one night after hitting a pothole pretty good. My engine light came on and I took my car to be checked. Despite of me not having an appointment, they were able to inspect my car and fix it for me in a timely manner. First time leaving a review for an auto repair shop. What Mike did was above and beyond, Id love to help others who need help. I was stranded in San Bruno when my car completely died on the road. I figured the alternator failed, so the car for sure wont drive. I live in East Bay, not familiar with the area, so was going through Google reviews to figure out where to tow my car to. The 4.9 review immediately caught my eye. I called Extra Care. Mike asked about the symptoms, and told me to stay there. While I was expecting Mike to help get a tow truck, to my surprise, he showed up in about 10 minutes without a tow truck. I was surprised. How would he get the car to the shop? Out of my imagination, using an battery pack, Mike was able to drive the car to the shop. The car kept stalling, Mike just kept restarting in Neutral. I never thought one could do that. This guy really knows what he is doing. From the moment I was stranded to the car was in the shop, it was all under one hour. I guess any one knows how painfully long you would need to wait for a tow truck. Mike is doing above and beyond to help someone save time. The car was fixed the next day with a very reasonable price. Mike showed me where the problem was and explained why it might happened. That was nice. He is really passionate with what he does. 5 Star! I hope this review can help more people who need help with a great service!

Authentic, friendly, communicative. Theyre going to be my go-to shop going forward. Ive had my mix of good and poor experiences with mechanics (dealership and not) in the past. I can confidently say that Mike and team provided an exceptional experience. They promptly responded to my texts and I was able to drop off my car the same day. They walked me through what they were going to do, any initial assumptions, took the time to elaborate on why they believed the initial assumptions, and then were incredibly communicative on what they learned before providing a recommendation. I truly appreciated the authenticity and transparency.

I got in touch regarding a drive belt change and received an unsolicited lecture on how the Honda dealerships/shops know nothing about cars (!!), plus a strong subliminal message that I am stupid. How do you know you need to change your drive belt? Oh, I dont know, I had a dream last night and woke up thinking it would be a great idea. Wont be coming here to get further belittled. A simple Sure, come up on Monday and we will do it for you would do. EDIT: The owner replied 3 weeks later, as you see below. Message for the owner: Friends dont treat their friends with contempt. Yes, you did say Honda doesnt know anything about cars (I posted my review within an hour after the phone call, so it was fresh in my memory; you waited 3 weeks to reply.) Its admirable that, instead of just simply apologizing (because maybe you were having a bad day back then), you still manage to blame ME for not seeing things. This was an easy fix - you had my phone number, you could have offered a complimentary check or a discount if I take my opinion down. Instead, you proved you are lacking in basic respect and humility. I cannot say a word about your experience with cars, because I never used your service, but your customer service sucks, my friend.

Mike is an honest and straightforward mechanic. When he reviewed my car he was honest and let me know which repairs can be done on my own. He did the same when he reviewed my parents car. Other mechanics will just bill you and not take the time to be honest about repairs. His shop quickly fixed my rear view mirror. I also like that he gives detailed receipts with notes of repairs done/stuff that needs to be fixed. He is also my dog s best friend and makes time to pet her and give her treats!

I am so grateful for Extra Care auto, I left my car at the airport and when I came back it wouldn t start. It was towed to the closest place and I m glad it was here, the owner was very patient at explaining everything and even went further to suggest other things that should be looked at. I never felt taken advantage of and haven t had any problems since. 100% recommend!

They were able to take my broken down car when nobody else was able (which is nobody s fault, everyone is busy) so I really appreciated that he squeezed us in. Mike was great at communicating and being honest the entire way through! Had the best experience and my car is all fixed up. Been coming back for all my car service needs and the care and service is just as amazing each time.

This review is MUCH overdue. I came to Mike in an emergency because my 2004 Pontiac Grand AM randomly broke down on me with a peculiar problem I was on my way to work when my car suddenly started flashing Service Engine Soon alongside extreme trembling and accelerating was no longer an option because the sound emitting from the engine was frankly clear it would cause further damage if I drove it much longer. For me, as a girl, it s extremely anxiety inducing coming into a repair shop with very little knowledge about engines, cars, costs, etc. I was honest and straight forward with Mike about my desires about fixing and also NOT fixing because of my car s age and also financial obstacles. Through the whole process, which took a few days, Mike was SO patient with me, diligent and dedicated to find what was wrong with my car which he DID!!! Mike was honest, patient and most importantly, never pressured me to make decisions I never felt comfortable making. He was helpful, earnest and very efficient in his work. He was so rad and showed me the aftermath of what had happened to my car (pieces, area, etc) I appreciate his work ethic, and I HIGHLY recommend him with ANY issue you might be facing!! I took my car for regular maintenance here and found I had a cracked axle boot. He told me I only needed to replace one side, saving my money right off the bat. I was concerned about alignment, and he explained that it doesnt really save you that much gas mileage unless the car is really veering off course. Alignments are way oversold. He noticed my transmission fluid was too dark, notified me promptly and replaced it. He even threw in a tire rotation for free. That also fixed the alignment issue. Mike is an honest guy, and I will definitely be taking my car back here.

Mike has provided me with the best auto service I have ever seen. He took a personal interest in the car and really saved me from a very uncomfortable situation. My car s water pump broke while I was driving to San Francisco, and the engine overheated. So, a pipe blew up and started spilling coolant fluid on the overheated metal, turning my car into a moving cloud of dense grey smoke. I left the car to a mechanic in San Francisco, who charged me over 1000$ to change the broken pipe. He failed to identify the cause of the rupture (i.e., the malfunctioning water pump). He told me that more accurate diagnostic was supposed to be done and that, if I wanted to proceed, I was going to pay other 1000$. So, when I realized that this place was trying to scam me again, I left. I brought my car to Extra Care, where I met Mike. I told him what happened, and he decided to have a look at the car without even charging for that. He identified the problem and fixed it for an extremely reasonable price. He and his team did a terrific job on the car. They have proven to be really knowledgeable and professional and to pay remarkable attention to detail. It was a great pleasure meeting Mike. His professionalism and experience are combined with honesty and care. It is so hard to find mechanics who put their customers first and do not try to rip them off. Mike s integrity and dedication define one of the best shops I have had the pleasure to visit.

Mike is great. My family has been going to him for all our car needs since before I was born, and hes consistently provided fantastic service at an affordable price. I recently just got my first car, a Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, and wanted to install a catalytic converter shield due to hearing about the uptick in thefts that have been occurring around the Bay Area lately. Installation was done within a day, and he even looked over and provided a fix for a headlight that had been getting condensation buildup underneath it for no additional charge. Cant recommend this place enough.

My tire pressure sensor fault warning message came on, while I was still 20 minutes from home and late at night. I called Extra Care Auto because no one else was open, and I spoke with Mike. He was so incredibly helpful. I dont know anything about cars, and he talked me through what the problem might be, how I could check the tires myself, and how to assess if I could keep driving or if I needed to take it in immediately. He was so kind and concerned about my safety--honestly, I dont know what I would have done without him. Super grateful for his help!

Took in car due to some white smoke popping up. Not the best in diagnosing my car, thought the worst (blown head gasket is my middle name ). Took it first to Extra Care due to the high positive feedback on different review sites. Talked to the owner Mike mid afternoon Thursday, told me to bring it in that day, even after 7 if need be. Dropped it off and he asked me if I was on a budget or not. The reason was if I was, he would make sure to fix only the part needed to get the car running, not things he would normally fix for preventive maintenance. That was so awesome, normally the shop suggests the works, not distinguishing between the two. I told him whatever needs to be done. Next morning he called to say it was a radiator hose, and he thought that would be it but he d let me know if anything else. That s where I normally get the call saying it was the transmissions or head gasket not Mike, he called me around 3:30 to say everything good and car was ready to go Picked it up at 5, after $130 diagnosis, par per course total was only $400 all together, I thought it would be 3K! He gave me a lot of great advice, very down to Earth, great customer service, treats employees with respect, personally checks every car before getting back to customer, a guy you can have a beer with. Great experience, wish I d found Extra Care a decade or so ago! Highly recommend!!! Kelly Walsh

Took my daughter s 1965 Mustang in to have differential gear oil change, to understand why one of the rear tires wobbled and replace the trans oil gasket. After one week I got the diff oil changed and a write up for $650... 1hour to estimate diff oil change, 1 hr to tell me trans oil has a leak plus a screw missing and 2 hours for general observations. If I was to go thru and get the issues fixed I would be out two grand....My advice, understand the owner sees you older car as a constant revenue stream and if you re good with that then this is the right place for you.

Some jerk had a bunch of trash bags on top of his car on the freeway and 2 of them fell off. We ran over one because we could not move out of the way, we could only slow down. Thank God we are safe but 1 of the garbage bags got tied up around the drive shaft. We tried to pull some of the garbage bag off but we still needed a professional so we ended up at extra care auto repair. We met Mike, he was extra professional and quick. I 100% recommend them

After I took my car to Mikes shop for a brake repair, it was evident that Extra Care Auto Repair excels in both. After this first experience, Extra Care Auto Repair had won my familys business. Later, when I asked Mike if I could tow my car to his shop after roadside assistance was unable to assist with putting on a spare (the wheel had an adapter that they were unable to remove), Mike volunteered to drive over and do it himself - at night and in the rain - so that I didnt have to wait for the tow. Mike went above and beyond to repair my son s car. Finding parts for such an old car took extra leg work, but Mike made it happen. He repaired the water pump, timing belt, rack and pinion, replaced the oil and some other good stuff. Happy customer here!

Super nice and helpful! The real deal

Mike saved my life. Had he not been able to fix my car as quickly and inexpensively as he did, I likely would not be here. My (now ex) husband would have killed me. I found Extra Care online the night I kicked out my ex. It was midnight when I called what I thought to be an after hours answering service. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be the man himself.. I apologized for the hour and told him I was in a bad place and really needed someone to help me. I must have sounded so panicked and borderline crazy.. Yet, after I explained my situation to him (at the time I was undergoing chemo and had a physically abusive husband I had just kicked out), Mike told me to get my car towed to his shop the next day. He promised to get my car up and running ASAP and to do whatever he could to keep the cost down. Mike didnt know me. He had a 10 minute conversation with a strange woman who was about to spiral out as a result of her imploding life. He easily could have told me they were overbooked. He could have simply hung up (a stranger unloading her personal problems on him at midnight in the middle of a workweek? I wouldnt have blamed him). Instead, he reassured and comforted me as one would a friend or family member. Mike then followed that up by doing two weeks worth of work on my car in three days and charged me significantly less than he could have. I was sick, alone and scared. Mike cared. He was empathetic and kept to his word. He did something a lot of people wont.. he sacrificed time and money to help me. I will never forget it. You, good sir, are an angel and one of my personal heroes. Thank you for being a kind, decent person. Thank you for setting the example for how a business owner should treat their customers. I ve going here for a few years and Mike always performs service at a reasonable price and never over charges for unnecessary services. This last service I had with Extra Care I thought there was major damage to my daughters car. It is 2020 and due to Covid she wasn t driving her car very often. I told her to check her engine oil and she did. Later we checked and Due to a rust stain on the engine oil dipstick I can see where she thought there was oil. In any case she drove the car with no oil in it and her car almost broke down on the side of the road. I put oil in it but the car wasn t running right and I thought the engine blown. Long story short, brought the car to Extra Care and Mike said the engine wasn t blown and he only had to repair a part that ended up costing only a couple hundred dollars. After few hours, got the car back and it s running good as new. Mike could have easily inflated the price but didn t. That s an honest mechanic with integrity!

I am always pleased with my service here. I drive from Hayward because I know Mike and crew will take good care of my Prius. On my last visit, Mike noticed my nearly-bald tires and saved me a disaster on my trip to Colorado! (My previous mechanic hadnt noticed the tires!!) I trust the work done here and highly recommend these guys for all you auto services!

Let me tell you something having your car break down at night while on vacation is never fun especially if you are 300 miles away from home but the owner Mike was knowledgeable and Helpful & most importantly friendly. He went above an beyond keeping me updated on the status of my car . He provides superior quality work at a reasonable rate . This is an honest shop and you dont get that from people anymore . I wouldnt go to any other repair shop except for Extra care auto repair if I lived in San Francisco. Side note the owner even drove my wife and I to our Airbnb after our car broke down and picked us up from the airport. Who does that anymore . Nobody does but Extra Care Auto Repair puts Their customers first .

One year in the shop, $15K, constant runaround as far as the problem/problems with my car, Mr. Rosen said I had a very well built engine only to be told at the end of 2020, after all of the above, that my engine was blown and that I needed a new one. I had only brought the car in for an oil leak. AVOID THIS PLACE.

I just bought a 2018 Honda and it has over 60k on it so it was a good idea to have someone take a look at all the fluids before I start putting miles on it. I came across these guys on Yelp and I am glad I did. They let you know that they dont do just oil changes but a complete inspection which I think is awesome. They ended up changing my air filters and transmission fluid as well. Coming from a mechanic background it was great knowing Im having some straight shooters working on my car. Please visit them for any car issues.. I am very pleased with their expertise and honesty. Oh and great prices for their throughout work.

I was having trouble with my power steering on my 2005 Nissan Altima, and admittedly waited too long to fix the issue. I recently moved to California and chose to come here because of the numerous positive reviews. It is really hard to find an honest, genuine mechanic and I can tell you with great confidence that you will always find that in Mike. He was nothing but patient and kind with me. He will always take the time to sit down and speak with you regarding the issues with your car and go above and beyond to help you solve those issues. I have taken my car for two rotor replacement here last year. Pretty happy with the new rotor and brake job. Last week I came back to have my vehicle A/C to look at. Mike recharge the A/C system and put a dye. He told me to use the A/C and return within a week time. After I drop off the vehicle, he found my condenser had the leak. Gave me a reasonable estimate for the repair job. The repair was done in a timely manner and professionally. You will not find a more honest mechanic in town.

Ive been to Extra Care a few times now for various repairs and services. Initially I came in for spark plugs (assuming I needed them because of the mileage on the car) and some other things. Mike took a look at my car and advised me on what the car needed, even going as far as saying that the spark plugs did not need to be changed. He also advised me on the urgency of some other repairs, explaining what needed to be repaired and what I could hold off on. He really worked with me to make sure my car was in excellent condition, but was not spending money on repairs that were not necessary. Every time we talked, he would explain the reasoning behind his statements, show me the part in question, made sure I was fully aware of my options, and left the decisions up to me. He was never pushy and never insisted on a repair that I did not need. Quite the opposite, in fact. He even made the effort to make sure I got my car back the same day after I dropped it off once and told him I couldnt leave it overnight. Im usually wary of getting a bad deal when dealing with an auto repair shop, but the guys at Extra Care are honest people that go above and beyond to provide excellent service.

After visiting family at Stanford Hospital, our car broke down minutes into our journey home we live 3 hours away! It was midnight, so we had our car towed to Mike s shop, and we crossed our fingers that it wouldn t be a nightmare to coordinate a repair from afar. To our relief, Mike was incredible to work with. He kept us informed each step of the way, and he even sent us a video and photo (!) to ensure we understand what he was seeing and why he was making his recommendations. When we finally met him in person to pick up our car, he popped the hood to show us his finished work as well as the old parts he d kept for comparison. This is one of the best auto repair shops in the Peninsula. Not only do they have fair prices but the workers and owner are amazing! Came in for an oil change which also includes tire rotation and break check for a very reasonable price. The workers there took great care of me and the owner explained problems with my car in a very helpful and non pushy way. It is very hard to find a reliable, honest car shop like this one. Will definitely be back again!

I have a 2006 Audi A6 with 200K miles. This car had served me well for over 10 years and one day it just started choking! I had it towed to Extra Care, close to where I broke down. This place gets 5 stars! Mike, the owner, was very accommodating. The towing people left me high and dry for 5 hours and Mike was kind enough to allow me to drop off the car after-hours when the tow finally arrived. The car was in the shop for 15 days and during that time, communication was never lacking. Mike kept me informed every step of the way, which I really appreciated. At one point, he even suggested that the cost to repair the car may not be worth it due to the cars value at its age/mileage. However, since Im clearly attached to this vehicle, I decided to proceed with the repairs and it is now running like new! Thank you MIke and Jim!!! ...Oh and did I mention that Mike also negotiated my car rental rate for me? I ended up with a mustang convertible for $30 a day :) Thank you for everything and I look forward to working with you again. I know youll take good care of my old girl!

Thank you Mike and Jim for your dedicated work on our 1997 Toyota Corolla with low mileage (under 50,000 mi) which we intended to be our backup car in our old age. Well, here we are, 73 years old and our 97 would pass the CA Smog Test. Long story short, Mike, Jim, his team + buddy mechanics wouldnt give up. Mike kept us up to date on what they were doing and why to solve the mystery of why it wouldnt pass. It was running fine. I would have recommend Extra Care before, but now it is absolutely the best place to go for car repair. They are professional, my car is always done on time, and for the quoted price. My car broke down with a broken thermostat and water pump (major overheating!) on 101-N near Candlestick Park, and I needed it towed to a nearby facility. It was late afternoon, about 5pm, on a Thursday. Most places were already done answering the phone, but this place really came through for me. Other places I called said, Its getting late and were closing. Park on the street and leave your keys in our mailbox...trust us...well call you when your car is fixed. When I called this place, Mike Rosen (owner) picked up and said Im here till midnight. Bring it in, Ive got you covered. He delivered above-and-beyond friendliness, transparency, and service. These are honest guys doing good work. We bring all of our family cars to this shop because of the quality care and honest prices. Would highly recommend them to others. The shop is also very convenient as it is close to the San Bruno Caltrain station and about a 10 minutes walk to the nearby BART station as well.
