In the afternoon I called for a reservation and they told me they closed at 10 and that I needed to arrive before 10 but due to road issues we couldnt arrive at 10 and the worker called me to ask if I was going to arrive and I told him yes but I was 25 minutes away. He said he would wait for me and if I didnt arrive he would go to his house and if we arrived there he would be waiting for us and there were no more one-bed rooms and he gave me 2 for the same price, breakfast is brought to the house and eaten in the room. They give you coffee, bread, bananas, orange, yogurt and the rooms are good, they have everything you need and its quiet. Rooms: Good condition Walkability: If you can walk Food and drinks: Is the gasoline nearby?

Its not a fancy place, but there was no intention of staying in the room other than resting. Its a bag breakfast of fruit and stuff. Theres a gas station on premises. Check-in was really easy.

The rooms are absolutely fine. You cant really call breakfast breakfast. Its more like a small snack bag. The only thing thats freshly made is coffee, of which youre only allowed one per person.

Classic motel, clean and comfortable room. Location a bit far from Monterey and therefore not very convenient to the city center or to fast food and restaurants. It is located in the forecourt of a gas station and has a small general store adjacent. Breakfast is served take away since there is no breakfast room. Staff however kind and helpful.

Our room located on the end of the second floor, and no view to see just a wall. The room is fairly large with 2 queen, refrigerator, TV and a desk. The bed is hard on my back. The breakfast is a to go bag that you can pick up at the lobby. The location is convenient close to stores and restaurants, and 15 minutes drive to Pacific Grove in Monterey California. The hotel is located behind the gas station, we missed it because there s no hotel sign outside. Nearby activities: The location is good close to stores and restaurants, 15 minutes drive to Pacific Grove.

Attached to a gas station, rooms were gross, dirty floor, rust on the appliances and the showers. Beds were absolutely DISGUSTING, sheets were damp, blood stains on the blankets along with some other brown stains on both beds. I had an immediate allergic reaction as soon as I laid down on the bed. My arms legs and back were itchy, red and my eyes swelled up. I ended up taking a nap in my car because I was not sleeping in this filthy room, I am really hoping I can get a refund because paying 200$ for a room that frankly is a biohazard (due to the blood on the sheets) is actually ridiculous.

For us, it was a temporary stopover for Monterey. We couldnt find suitable accommodations there. We stayed there from Saturday to Sunday. The value for money wasnt good at all. You shouldnt expect too much from the so-called breakfast bag. Wed go to Salinas next time. There are plenty of alternatives there if there are no more accommodations in Monterey.

I don t recommend this hotel, I reserved this hotel a week ago. I get the hour they told me to check in and they still give me the room a hour late. It s unfair, if the guests take longer than agreed to check in. Hotels charge you if your late, I believed this was a good hotel. I will not be staying here again.

Good hotel on a budget for visiting Monterey. Comfortable bed, light breakfast, good wifi, free parking. Nothing fancy but the staff were very friendly and it was a comfortable room!

*Updated July 2024: Came back here to stay with my sister for 4th of July weekend, and Im a bit disappointed. The room is still nice but the person working the lobby during breakfast didnt provide us all the food items we were supposed to get. He gave us a bag of just a sweet pastry, a cutie tangerine, a banana, and a granola bar. I asked about the hot pocket because that was provided last time and he said No we dont have that even though I could literally see the hot pockets in the back of their office. But whatever, who knows maybe theyre only for employees... However, they also had a sign that lists out every breakfast item you will get and the sign says you will get yoghurt, but there was no yoghurt in our bags. Not sure was that employee forgot or just being cheap. We were already on our way out before we remember about the yoghurt so we just let it go. The last time I was here Ive met other employees and they were more friendly than this guy. Well probably still come back again because its a nice place in a quiet area but I hope I dont have to encounter that type of workers again, especially because it was way more expensive than the last time we were there a few months prior. TV has xfinity cable, towels provided, free breakfast (pastry, a hot pocket, orange, banana, yoghurt) with hot coffee, tea, hot cocoa.

I forgot to take more photos, but this place is AWESOME! Its the smaller hotel thats BIG on service!! I hurt my back, and they were super friendly and got us a room on the 1st floor even though they were almost completely full! The whole area has flowers, well kept up grounds, and the office staff went out of their way to help us when we asked for suggestions. I cant say enough great things about this place. If you want comfort, relaxation, and good people, this is the place to go. They also have a.mini market next to the hotel, which made it super helpful for those last things we forgot or wanted.

This stay was excessively expensive for what we ve got. The rooms could be a lot cleaner. Also the breakfast is a bag breakfast and promised yogurt was missing. But the beds are very comfortable. And the front desk staff were very nice and kind.

Its OK, definitely needs sound deadening.

Great service at checkin and check out and with the bagged breakfast. However, cleanliness could be improved as there were many (5+) hairs all over the bedding which didnt feel great. We were too exhausted to fuss but it did put a damper on things. Nothing within walking distance but a good hub as long as youre OK driving everywhere.

Rooms are fine but one of our side table lampshade was broken and hanging off the lamp. Remote didnt work, needed batteries. No soaps, shampoo or conditioner in room at all. Staff very friendly and helpful!

Fantastic staff.. the rooms are clean and well taken care of. The price is great. The snack bag for breakfast will get you going and well proportioned. Very clean, older hotel that is nicely remodeled. The staff is very friendly. The grab and go breakfast was VERY generous. Breakfast sandwich or burrito, banana, tangerine, yogurt, 2 breakfast bars, a sweet roll and a baby belle cheese. I will definitely stay here again whenever I come to Marina.

The room is beautiful and clean. They provide make up remover wipes, shoe shine wipes, shower caps - very thoughtful people.

We stayed there for one night on our way to Napa. It is conveniently located 15 minutes away from downtown Monterey and Cannery row. The front desk staff was very friendly and let us check in earlier. The room was not fancy but it was very clean, and cozy with thoughtful details. If the AC/heater wasn t too loud we would have definitely given five starts. Overall we would stay there again.

Great place is located very close to the ocean. Arrived early and the manager was a very nice young man. He allowed us an early check-in which allowed us another couple of hours to explore. Really appreciate him. Would recommend this place to anyone that needs a place and wants to be near the water.

Very charming rooms with sweet staff! Unfortunately due to delayed flights we missed the first night we had booked. We got in later the next morning, exhausted from travel whoas, and they let us check in at 10am and only charged us for one day. The staff was happy to give recommendations on things to do and see around the area and were very personable. The room was very clean and perfect for my husband and I to rest up. The location isnt right on a beach or next to a downtown, but is within very reasonable driving distance and was quiet and peaceful at night. The next morning the staff had made up little to go bags with breakfast items such a granola, fruit and yogurt and even offered us a warm breakfast sandwich. Wish we could have stayed longer, but unfortunately we had to move on to our next leg of the trip. Definitely recommend though and if we ever make it back I know where to stay!

Susan and her family are amazing people. Such great details and touches to the hotel that make your stay not only comfortable but aesthetically pleasing. Was in Cali for over 10 days and stayed at some very well known resorts but none beat the value we got here. From the cleanliness to the interior to the space and convenience, everything was five star. On top of that, the hosts are incredibly helpful. 1. Very conveniently located near all points of interest. Big Sur just an hour drive, Carmel is barely 30 mins, Santa Cruz was 40 mins, Monterey is just 10 mins away. Gas station on the property. 2. The attention to detail on our rooms was impeccable. It was clean, fresh, smelling wonderful and the interior was thoughtful. The furniture, book and lights all added to its charm. They even provided a brand new bath tub mat which was incredibly thoughtful and hygienic. 3. Although its right by the road, it was pretty quiet at night. Soundproofing was pretty solid. A/C had a little noise but almost like a white noise which actually helped sleep. 4. The bed was marvellous. Clean, fresh linen and so comfortable. I slept like I was home. 5. Breakfast was plentiful in the morning, thoughtfully packed in a brown bag so you can take it on your adventures. 6. Room came with microwave, fridge, tv and good wifi. They have a common water refilling station. My experience had no cons to it, so I have no constructive feedback to share. It was a wonderful stay and I would not think twice before booking again.

We came in for a short stay. Just needed a place to sleep and left at 6am the next morning. Since breakfast is usually not available until 7am they were very accommodating and provided a bagged selection of breakfast items for me to take when we checked in.

Great service by the staff. The room was clean and welcoming. We took the king bed room and it was a nice place to relax after a long day. The complementary breakfast is awsome. It let us leave and get on with our vacation without needing to stop for food. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Perfect place to stay close to Monterey. We came for 2 nights on a 3-day weekend. Great location. Friendly staff. Large, clean, comfortable rooms. I gave the service a 4 instead of 5 because the hot water at breakfast was only warm, not hot. Otherwise we liked the simple sack breakfast. There were enough snacks to save some for later. We would definitely stay here again!

Dont let the outside looks fool you. This place was by far the best stay Ive had. They were so nice and clean. Huge rooms! I called early in the morning to ask about heat, hot water and safe location for myself and 3 kids. I was visiting for a baby shower and the original place I stayed was terrible. He told me to come right over. Didnt change me extra for checking in at 8 am, and even turned the heat on for us to warm the room up. There is a gas station connected and the worker inside was really scuzzy but the people that worked the inn was very nice. The room was huge and very clean. I never felt unsafe. I would definitely stay here again!

This Howard Johnson establishment in Marina is quite convenient to say the least. It is also a Valero gas station and the location is right on a the corner of reservation and California Ave. The room met my standards and I would recommend this venue to any and everybody.

The front desk middle aged lady, probably the supervisor charged $20 cash. I made reservation for 4 people but she said it shows reservation for 1. Did not give me any payment receipts. Beware!!!

Nice place near the beach, great value for the price. Rooms were decently clean, however the floor could have used a good deep cleaning. Pleasantly surprised to even have a private patio. Fairly quiet with some road noise. Very nice staff. They give you breakfast to go, nothing fancy but nice to have included with the room. Overall we would stay here again! Safety: Area felt safe, hotel seemed safe. Food and drinks: We had great Thai food nearby at Im Thai restaurant.

Great customer service. Informative with loads of suggestions on where to visit around the area. Room was decent. Comfortable beds for the two days we stayed. Bathroom was small but ok for what its needed for. Shower is small. I had to cleanse the shower floor because I found d hair on the side wall. Put a towel on the floor to step on in the shower. The only thing that troubled me was the air conditioning. It was not loud. However, it was very dusty. Luckily the room had a balcony, I dusted off the filter as best as I could. Which once I put it back on the air conditioner, more dust was flowing in the air. Gas station/ mart, right in the same section of the INN. So that was good. Best gas price in town for that matter. Other than that, there is lots of good food around the area. Highly recommend Keikis hawaiian food! 2.5 blocks down.

It is a clean and friendly Korean accommodation. I was grateful that they warmly welcomed me and told me about the history of Korean settlement in the Marina area after the Korean War, the surrounding food, and tourist attractions, even though they were busy. They also helped me relieve my fatigue with breakfast packaged with fresh and high-quality fruit, spacious and safe rooms, and parking.

I would give negative stars if I could. Don t go here. The Employees are rude, especially the manager and they took money off of my credit card even though my boyfriend and I told them multiple times not to charge the credit card because they forced us to give them the number just incase and they have, and when we checked out they told me they would give me a refund on my card and then they took my boyfriends card and charged him and I still haven t received my refund and it s been way past the 3-5 business days they said it would take. Now my credit is messed up. They are thieves and rude and they are quick to place blame on problems that they are having with their rooms, especially when they are irritated about having to fix the mistakes that they have had (which they didn t because I still don t have my money). I recommend just going to a different motel.

Booked a recent stay at the Howard Johnson in Marina, Ca, directly with the motel as we wanted a downstairs room. The motel is a couple of minutes off HWY 1, sitting behind a Valero gas station/ minimart, with fast food and restaurants just down the street. Quiet location, and on the days we were there, better rates than Monterey or Santa Cruz, and definitely not the traffic of either town. Motel seemed busy, but during our stay, most of the trucks in the parking lot were guys from out of town staying to work construction jobs in the area. Our double queen room was fine, with hardwood floors and throw rugs, we even had a patio with a table and chairs, but this was not the chase with most units. Bed was comfortable, bathtub was small, and the shower curtain rod was hanging at an angle, so the shower curtain drooped at both ends. We had a minifridge and microwave, table and chair, and the vanity was not in the bathroom, but in the room near entrance door. Front desk staff was friendly, they even had maintenance replace a missing smoke alarm which we noticed the first night. But the best thing about the motel may have been the sampling of treats in our grab and go breakfasts, by far the biggest number of items we have ever encountered. Location, price, and breakfast are the reason we will try again.

That part first theres two TV remotes in there and one was like I have at home and all I could get was news channels the menu didnt give me let me watch it was on there. Rumors okay if you enjoy the patio the the go bag was good

Ive stayed here a couple times and love the place! Its family owned, rooms are always perfect and the breakfast is yummy! If youre not into Monterey prices and dont mind a 5 minute freeway drive, then this is perfect! Ill def be a repeat customer! Also, mini fridge and microwaves! Edit! The bed is amazing and they provide pillows with different thicknesses!

The hotel is fine. Breakfast is served in the lobby, but the service is good. The hotel is 15 minutes from the city center, and you need a car to spend several days here and reach the city center.

Outdated badly needing renovation. Not worth the cost of the room. Dont even have any comfortable chairs to sit on.

Outside could look better. Odd seeing a Valero gas station right outside. But, nice clean room. King size bed. Refrigerator & microwave. Much better inside than outside. It was a good place to stay overnight. Id probably stay there again in a pinch.

They will rip you off. My kids played with the sand at the nearby beach and we used one of their small towels to wipe off the sand on their bodies before letting them get into the bathtub, in order to keep their bathtub from clogging. The towel had beach sand on it and the sand beach was easy to get off even just dusting by hands or rinsing with water. The manager Sarah said they were understaffed and she had to clean the room. She accused us used the small towel to mop their floor and charged us $50. Why on earth a traveler has to do the cleaning room task that they had paid the service for it? Any traveler with a dirty room will just call the front desk rather than spend their energy & time mopping their floor. That is nonsense. And what kind of hand-sized towel cost $50?

When I arrived at my room it was 6:30pm. Check in was 3:30pm my room was not cleaned, beds unmade, garbage from previous occupant still in the trash can, and used towels left on the floor and the chair. The manager gave a poor excuse and blamed it on the new trainee. Also the location is in a very shady part of town that I would never stay in after dark. We didn t even stay the night and drove 4hrs back home.

I am EXTREMELY impressed with this hotel. It s obvious it is a family run hotel. Friendly receptionist when we arrived and I checked in. When we entered the room, the sheets were clean, bathroom very clean, the room even smelled clean. The towels were thick like how towels should be and so was the comforter. I have to say I was is dream land last night. No issues with the air condition. We have stayed at other hotels in the past that we paid more and had issues with the amenities. Here you get hair dryer, iron for ironing your clothes, coffee machine, working fridge, thick towels, think comforter and clean room. The only down side was no WiFi. There s very little cell tower connection. They should offer WiFi at the least. But overall I am please with our night stay. We definitely got our money s worth. Next time hubby and I decide to stay overnight at Monterey from our dive trip, we are staying here!!! Service: A Quality: A++ Price: A

Place is easy to get to, clean, affordable. Everyone who works there is exceptionally kind and helpful. The bed was pretty comfortable and the free breakfast bag was a nice touch. I left something after checking out and they were awesome in helping me find it. I would definitely stay here again when in the area.

The room was musty and there was some trash left on the floor under the desk and bed, and some mold in the ceilings. Easy to fong and conveniently has a gas station sharing their parking lot. Not the worst place Ive stayed, but could have been better.

Terrible customer service, we had a broken shower, the place was sold out we had to find a new hotel night time. This place didn t help us in any way, very bad situation.

We had a wonderful stay at this charming family owned hotel. We arrived a little early but housekeeping rushed our room so we could get in as soon as possible. There was fresh coffee and hot water for tea in the lobby which was much appreciated after being on the road for a long time. The room was really cute, modern and clean. We had a great sleep and enjoyed the included breakfast which included yogurt, cheese, fruits, pastries, snack bars, and a hot breakfast burrito or sandwich. It was so much we stocked up the car for the next leg of our trip. Speaking of which, the on site gas station and convenience store was really handy! It was quiet overnight, we never heard any cars driving in or out. Definitely dont miss this little gem if you are visiting the area!

Great little getaway.

We arrived pretty late in the night and the woman at the front desk was very friendly and even offered places to go in the day. She made the check in process easy, comfortable and welcoming. There is a gas station right next to the hotel so its convenient to get snacks and gas. The ocean is right down the street which is also a plus. Because of Covid they dont offer the continental breakfast anymore but they do have really good breakfast bags that you can pick up in the morning with really good morning fuel essentials. Will stay here again!

The worst experience Ive had in years. When you make changes to your stay, make sure that you and the agent are on the same page. I have to leave on Saturday due to a miss understanding which left a bad taste in my mouth.

I would say this is practically 4.5 motel. Price 5, amenities 3, location 4, cleaness 5, service 5, its really affordable in terms of value.

Just checked in and already the clerk was very helpful. Small office lobby/everything. Its true about the gas station Vallero in the same space but totally separated though. It is a Wednesday so it wasnt so busy. We got 2 rooms next to each other and both rooms appeared clean. Very spacious for small family. I think this was one of the best hotel deals weve ever had ever. If you like going to the beach and need a place to stay in Monterey CA. Then Id recommend this you. No hot water in shower, fridge had a foul or odor. It smelled like a dead animal in there. Toilet didnt flush well.

I wish I could give 0 stars. We just stayed here this weekend. We were in town for a wedding and we booked a total of 10 rooms, for 17 adults and 11 kids. We were told check in was 3pm only to find out when we got there that its actually 4 pm. When we arrived they were still cleaning the rooms, including the manager because apparently they were understaffed. The manager was very rude and said no one wanted to come back to work after covid. Thats unfortunate, but then they shouldnt be booking at full capacity. Also they advertise free breakfast which is actually just a grab back with some fruit a stail danish and yogurt. The hotel is in a sketchy area and its connected to a gas station. The lobby is literally connected to the liquor store. I would definitely not recommend this hotel. Do your self a favor and book the Holiday Inn express down the street!

Expensive and not much of a drink selection

The front desk girls were always very nice to me and my family. The gave us free water and the breakfast was good. There is a lot of space to park. Everything is perfect.

Check-In was great. Very friendly staff. Woman that checked me in was awesome. Room was clean and spacious. I would definitely stay here again. You can tell the management puts forth an effort to focus on small details that make a difference with the quality of this hotel, like the landscaping, plants in the room, cleanliness, offering bottled water at check-in all these little things make a difference. Great stay.

My friends and I really, really enjoyed our stay at this Howard Johnson property! It is so very, very clean and comfortable, and the owners/innkeepers are extremely nice. In fact, so nice that they had a lovely Christmas gift for us on Christmas Eve... a nice box of chocolates. How very nice of them! We noted how beautiful the landscaping was, and how nicely the property was decorated for the holiday season. Clearly, these are folks that take great pride in their hotel! We will certainly stay here on our next visit to Monterrey and we highly recommend!

Biggest rooms and great prices. I like this place, the staff is friendly. Straight forward with rules, seems like common sense but common is becoming more and more uncommon.

I can not say enough about how wonderful our experience here was from start to finish. I am not one to review hotels but this was the perfect opportunity to give back to the amazing staff. I live in Washington State and wanted to meet my family in Monterey for the weekend. They were driving from Los Angeles and of course my unorganized self planned this trip on VALENTINES DAY WEEKEND. You can imagine everything under $500.00 was booked and it was so spur of the moment we panicked. Luckily I found the Howard Johnson Marina and at a great price, under $100.00 so my family and I were a little skeptical but booked anyway. My family arrived first and said how nice it was. I thought they were just trying to be nice because we felt we had booked a hotel everyone would feel uncomfortable sleeping in, mostly because my sister has a newborn. We ended up getting there close to midnight. Sarah, (the owner?) was there waiting for us with water bottles and fresh cookies. We had literally just driven 15 hours straight, felt awful, tired, and ready to just go to bed. I know it sounds silly but literally all of that changed after a minute talking to Sarah. I stood at the doorway with her chatting and laughing away, we kept saying goodnight but would start talking again, it felt like we were friends. I thought at least the staff was friendly and that was worth booking there but no, there was so much more. The room was huge! It was not a $100.00 room at all. Everything is updated and really clean. The beds are so comfortable and the sheets were really nice. There was a refrigerator and all of the other essentials you would need. We were so impressed and our three kids were so excited. Continental breakfasts at your typical under $100.00 hotel (if its even offered) is some C grade coffee, a fruit basket, and individually wrapped pastries from those variety boxes but not here. Sarah had over 4 different coffee choices brewing from a reputable company, along with juices, milk, fruit, bagels, cereal, eggs, sausages, and more I didnt even look at. She was sweeping in between people coming in and out and so attentive. We stayed two nights and honest to goodness had a great time. We felt safe, comfortable, well looked after, and full. I talked to Sarah half a dozen times along with a few of her family members and everyone was so over the top genuinely nice. As far as distance this location is close to several local food stops, a few fast food places and gas stations near by but not in the busy hub of things. The locations access roads felt more like side street short cuts that the locals take to get to downtown Monterey faster. I could not have asked for a better hotel and experience. This is the gem of the area we love to visit and have made this our only option as far as where we will stay from now on when we travel through the area. Again, I cannot express how great our trip became after finding this place, we are so grateful.

Rooms were super clean and staff was nice. Pre bagged breakfast was handy since I was in a hurry. They have AC which is important to me because you get fresh air in the room. It was nice & quiet! It s in a good area & even though the gas station is there you don t hear the cars!

I GIVE THEM 0 STARS !! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. THEY DONT ALLOW CANNABIS SMOKE . THEY WILL CHARGE YOU FOR TOWELS IF USED TO MANY OR SOMEWHAT DAMAGED. DONT SPILL A DRINK AND TRY TO CLEAN IT UP. THEY ALSO DO NOT CLEAN SHEETS OR ROOMS PROPERLY

I dont recommend for anyone to stay here they dont change the sheets when u ask for housekeeping they charged me $50 for dirty towels... accused me of smoking weed ...the smell was on my clothes they kicked me out...smd customer service e is poor

This is a solid stay. Staff was very friendly and conversational. Unfortunately no pool, hot tub, or spa. Clean rooms, good service, can t complain.
