Calfee Design in La Selva Beach

Here are the two things I think you need to know: 1) my review of their repair was that very good work was done 2) they don't adequately insure return shipping and you expose yourself to serious risk My specific experience was that I sent Calfee a damaged Dogma F12 frame (orignal retail $6500). UPS asked me what value I wanted to insure the package to when I sent to Calfee. I decided that $5k was a reasonable replacement value. UPS charges $2.70 for every $100 of insurance so I bought $132 of supplemental insurance to send the bike insured at $5k. When Calfee sent the bike back they insured it through Bike Flights at only $1600, which is what Calfee tells me what they insure all sent bikes because, in their experience, this is the absolute maximum that Bike Flights (or any other shipper) will pay out. Note: this is NOT what Bike Flights or UPS says. When my bike was returned, while the orginal damage appeared well repaired, a new crack had occured in the return transport in a area that I was less comfortable having repaired. I was, however, incorrect in thinking that the frame had been insured at replacement value. If your bike is lost, destroyed or otherwise unrepairable coming back from Calfee your max recovery is going to be $1600. If your the kind of person who doesn't check their bag at the airport, you may want to consider that you are gambling the difference between replacement cost and $1600. If you can drive your damaged frame there, they get 5 stars. If you need to ship it, you are rolling the dice.

I sent my Pinarello Grevil frame to Calfee for repair in November, received it back in February and got installed in March. Instead of Pinarello sign on one side of the frame I got Dogma. Really, look at the photo. On my question what to do Abraham and then Creig answered me that they could send me a shipping label. How is that? So I have to reassemble the bike, get box and packing, then wait and assemble it back? Because of their stupid mistake? Yes, I was said, no other options. I have no idea how well has the bike been repaired. I highly recommend not to use this company’s service if you don’t live near their store.

Calfee has always had a special place in my mind. Their early bikes set my young imagination ablaze. However, their current work and customer service is problematic. I sent an S-Works Aethos in for a repair around the drop out. Another repair company told me it could not be repaired, but I trusted Calfee when they said they could do it. Despite months of delays in the repair process, I was patient, confident the wait would be worth it. I was wrong. The work looks great, but they did not ensure proper alignment so that now the axle binds and the derailleur hanger does not mount straight. I would be ok with this if they offered to take a look and fix under warranty, however it is nearly impossible to get a hold of them and they do not respond to emails in a timely fashion, or at all. Unfortunately, I am left with a useless $5,500 frame on which I wasted $1,200 on a repair.

I have never stepped foot inside this business, but I did send my carbon frame for repair. The carbon repair turned out great and I have no issues so far.

Seems to be the only reputable carbon repair in California. Unfortunately, it has taken them about 7 weeks and counting to get me my bike back. Would not have expected a minor bottom bracket repair to take this long.

This is a magical bike shop! Awesome staff, weird/awesome bike projects all over, carbon everywhere, bamboo bikes, a stone throw to a beach, and a grass runway! Highly recommend the company for carbon repairs. And if you can, visit in person.

I was recently involved in an auto collision. My bike, a Colnago C60, was damaged when my car was rear-ended by another vehicle. I immediately knew that I wanted Calfee to do the necessary repairs. My LBS took the bike apart and shipped it Calfee’s HQ in La Selva Beach. Upon its arrival the bike was inspected and Samuel, from the Business Development Team, contacted me with a repair estimate. I agreed to the work and the artisans at Calfee began to work. Having a bike repaired, especially at an out of town repair facility, can be a stressful time for a rider (separation anxiety hits big time). During the entire process Samuel kept me updated on the progress of my bike’s repairs. His e-mails went a long way in reducing my stress levels. Last week, less than three weeks after Calfee received the damaged bike, it was back at my LBS readied to be re-assembled and ridden. This weekend I went out for long rides on my “new” C60 and all I can say is WOW. Che bella bicicletta Italiana. Bellissima. Mille grazie Calfee. If your carbon steed has been damaged or if you wish to change or refresh its current color scheme, then Calfee is the place to go for the gold standard on carbon repairs and painting.
