It's great to have an independent shop that is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the cars they repair. Equally important, Adam, the owner of Kirkwood VW, is honest and doesn't upsell or push other services or repairs that aren't required. I have a 2011 Tiguan that needed a preventative replacement of its timing chain tensioner. (there was an extended warranty from VW on this, and the car has less than 50k miles but is too old to qualify. When it fails, you wind up needing to replace the cylinder head, or potentially the engine due to the camshafts jumping timing.) The job requires removing the engine mount and I don't have the special holding tool to do the job correctly and safely, so I called around getting quotes on the job and picked Kirkwood to do the work. I dropped the car off at 8:00 in the morning and the car was ready the following morning. Adam did the replacement at a very fair price and exactly what he quoted on the phone - half the cost of some of the VW dealers in the area. I couldn't be happier with Kirkwood VW.
I've been going to Adam for 42 years now (since I learned how to drive). He always does an amazing job on my car, never will over charge for or work on something you don't need! Thank you Adam for everything you do! Honest work, honest guy. Tina
I have had my car fixed here many times over several years and have always got great service. Never had a problem with any of the repairs. Adam knows VW's, so if you have one take it to him.
I found Adam at Kirkwood VW from the excellent reviews here, especially with working on vintage VWs. I recently purchased a 1958 VW Beetle. A survivor car in pretty good condition. I wanted to have Adam go through it and do a tune up, adjust the valves, etc. He quickly found a problem with the carburetor and replaced the spark plugs. Said the valves were right on, so no need for a valve adjustment. How honest is that ? Most shops would have charged for a valve adjustment anyway. He also replaced my stuck choke cable and a few other things. The bug is running fantastic now. I don't normally write reviews but had to write this one. I highly recommend Adam. He's a great mechanic with a high attention to details. Also fair pricing as others have said. Thanks again Adam, much appreciated !!
I brought in a 2007 VW Bug for a mystery coolant leak that was not easy to find. The folks at Kirkwood VW were very nice and the did find the leak and got it fixed fast but the price was absolutely insane. They charged $480 for an $80 part! I understand tacking on a bit of markup for sourcing and ordering a part, but $400 is just outrageous. The labor cost and other things like fluids were also on the high end, but not as egregious as 400% parts mark up.
Took my ‘65 bus for a timing and valve adjustment. The bus has never run so well. These are adjustments I’ve done myself and have had other mechanics do but not with the same performance outcome. Adam’s knowledge and skill is top notch. Highly recommend Kirkwood.
EDIT October 5, 2022 Been taking my VW Beetle to Adam for years now and could not recommend his work more. He’s done the most basic annual oil checks and more, all the way to my most recent AC issue, and found reasonable fixes without me having to pay myself sick for them, which is greatly appreciated! Adam is straighforward and knowledgeable and detailed in his work, especially if you have a VW.
Adam saved my car!! I went to some other place to get my car fixed and they did more harm then good and i was without my car for a week! So being completely PISSED OFF I took my car to Adam and the rest is history. He fixed everything those other people were suppose to do in just a few short hours and for a very good price. Thank you so much Adam :)
Best VW shop in the bay area!!

Adam Id the most helpful VW mechanic
Owner/ mechanic is very knowlegable. Hes worked at this shop and now owns it for over 30 years.
Go to place for an aircooled VW!
They got me in and out, fixed the issue without alot of Bs!
Honest assessments, friendly people, fair prices. Will continue bringing our Jetta to them!
Awesome service!!!Took my 2010 GTI to this place after Capital VW (crooks) was going to egregiously overcharge me. ADAM was so awesome and professional. He diagnosed the problem quickly and the total price to fix was literally two thousand dollars cheaper than what was origionally recommended. So grateful to have found this place. Coming back for any and all mechanical problems!
ADAM KNOWS WHAT HES DOING! take your Vintage VWs to him and hell get them running better than ever. Honest Pricing for Great Work! When going here, GPS will take you to behind the building, but you need to get to the entrance on E Hacienda Ave! :D
Best vintage aircooled VW repair shop youll ever find! Been to plenty of mechanics and none of them can compare to Kirkwood. Took a Karmann Ghia to Adam years ago to install a new pair of dual carbs and it ran perfectly. Recently took in a 1972 bus to get my dual carbs tuned and its running better than ever. I live all the way in Gilroy but its worth the drive for sure!
Adam is extremely knowledgeable. If it s VW related, he knows his stuff. I ll be back for all of my service.
Owner is very chill, and he knows what he s doing.
Kirkwood VW is the only place I take my VW s. They are dedicated hard working chaps that know their stuff, and very honest as well. What else could you ask for in a mechanic? One of my cars was having some electrical issues and also needed some TLC on the engine. Kirkwood got my car running like a top.
I bought a 74 Super Beetle in January 2012. It had been sitting undriven for some time. A buddy of mine through BLTN suggested Kirkwood VW. I was able to get a same-day appointment, which ROCKED, and have it looked at. They spent several hours inspecting and fixing. I was able to work out a repair plan and timetable with them for a few bigger things that needed to be addressed. Honest work. Reasonable rates. Understanding people. It was awesome! Highly suggested!! Really.
