Jugendherberge Brienz in Brienz

I booked a double sharing room without attached washroom. Very tiny but clean room. Common washroom for women was clean too, but on another floor. Basic breakfast was included. The hostel's location is great. Direct access to the lake. There's a microwave in the basement that guests are allowed to use. 1 star is only because of the rude behaviour of the lady with the glasses at the reception. Upon arrival, I didn't know that the kitchen right next to the locker room and dining area was a private kitchen that belonged to her. I was walking around and checking the hostel as any person would normally do. The kitchen didn't have a no entry board. I simply took one step inside the kitchen and looked around and the woman yelled at me really badly and asked me to get out. This happened 5-10 mins after arriving at the hostel. I don't think this is an acceptable behaviour. Nobody should get yelled at for stepping inside a kitchen. She could have told that politely. She never apologised for this, and instead told me in the evening with a smiling face that she's very particular about her kitchen. I don't think that compensates for yelling at a guest.

Great location, very helpful hosts... nice property on lake. Located very close to rail station. Food is very good. So peaceful .

Located not far from the train station with a lovely view and just next to the lake! Staff was very helpful with their recommendations. Thank you guys! Also- very good price for dinners! Just a lovely place to stay at when in Brienz.

This is the perfect place to stay in Brienz, right next to the gorgeous lake and very close to Brienz-Rothorn train. Using that train to summit the mountain was one of the best experiences I had in Switzerland. The staff are very friendly,helpful and speak perfect English. The delicious breakfast is so filling and would cost $100 USD or more of you had it outside the hotel. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are clean and have excellent hot water. The nearby train and boat stations make this an excellent base for exploring or Switzerland or peaceful getaway in nature. Highly recommend!

We had a great overnight stay. The staff was helpful and friendly. Our room was clean, and the whole property was beautiful. swimming was invigorating too.

I am surprised by the very high reviews here. The location is amazing and the staff is kind (especially Sara). But the design of the hostel is poor. The communal rooms have 16 mattresses on the floor (not real beds) very close together. Your bed neighbor could reach out and touch you easily. Also, there is one window in the 16-bed room and it is extremely hot and not well-ventilated in the summer. Norms were not well-set around hostel culture and people were very loud in the rooms in the morning.
